Average Recommended Daily Calorie Intake
The calorie needs varies per person, but the average recommended daily calorie intake for adult males is from 2,500 to 2,800. For adult women it is 2,000. Many who want to lose weight are able to do so consuming 1,500 calories daily. Because the needs of individuals vary, knowing how to calculate your own need is necessary.
How to Calculate Your Calorie Needs
To figure this out you have to use the Harris-Benedict formula. This will determine your BMR (basal Metabolic rate). The BMR is the energy you require to function. If you want to shed some pounds, aim for a level that is less than the figures you get from this formula.
The BMR formula for women is 655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years). For men it is 66 + (6.3 x weight in lbs) + (12.9 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years).
Keep in mind that this formula is applicable only for adults. Toddlers need about 1,000 calories everyday, while children ages 7 to 10 have an average recommended daily calorie intake 1,970 for boys and 1,740 for girls. Teens from 15 to 18 years of age need more as they are at the growing stage.
Factor in Activity to the BMR Calculation
If you are active, BMR x 20%. If you are inactive, BMR x 30%. If you exercise several days a week, BMR x 40%. Multiply the BMR by 50% if you work out everyday. If you are an athlete or perform hard labor, multiply BMR by 60%.
Add the figure to the BMR total. The figures that emerge from this formula are the calories you can consume and keep your present weight. If you need to lose weight, you need to eat less than this.
Once you start to lose those pounds, you have to re-calculate the formula so you can evaluate the BMR again. Keep in mind that your age and health condition can influence your BMR.
If you have any ailments or taking medication, consult your doctor first. Do not be in a rush to lose too many pounds. Drastic diet changes may have a negative effect on the body.
The average recommended daily calorie intake as specified here is a general guide. If you need to lose a lot of pounds, consulting a dietician may prove beneficial.
